Inge Brandenburg was probably one of the best German jazz singers. Unfortunately, the music business and personal issues hindered her and eventually broke her. In the 1970s she pretty much retired from singing out of frustration and lack of engagements. She died in 1999, impoverished and almost forgotten.
Thanks to a 2011 documentary, a wider audience was made aware of her story and her music. Several albums have been released since then, both re-issues and previously unreleased recordings.
Here is her take on the jazz standard ‘Round Midnight from a 1963 tv show.
