Minyo Crusaders – Tanko Bushi

Minyo Crusaders revive a forgotten Japanese folk music masterpiece. Tanko Bushi is the most famous dance song performed at Japanese Bon Dance festivals (typically mid-August). Bon is a Japanese Buddhist custom celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years that honors the spirits of one’s ancestors. This custom has evolved into a family holiday where people return to ancestral family places to clean their ancestors’ graves in expectance that their spirits will revisit.

I like everything about this video. It’s traditional, it’s modern, it’s weird, it’s quirky. And I’m surprised that Minyo Crusaders’ full album, Echoes of Japan, was just nominated for a German Record Critics’ Award.
